Quick Guide to Cat6 Cable Specifications and Types

As far as ethernet cables go, Cat6 cables continue to be increasingly popular. They come in three variants or types which include Cat6 PVC Cable, Cat6 Riser Cable, and Cat6 Plenum Cable.

These three types of Cat6 cable have very different uses, but their specifications are similar. For example, a Cat6 Plenum Cable can be utilized in both riser spaces and plenum. In contrast, the same cannot be done with a Cat6 Riser Cable.

The Cat6 cable has been the leader in the networking market and continues to rise in popularity. It has been standardized by the Electronic Industries Association, EIA, and the Telecommunications Industry Association, TIA.

How Does Cat6 Cable Work?

This type of cable allows the data transfer rate of 1 Gbps, which is Gigabits per second, traveling a distance of up to 330 feet. The data transfer rate can increase to 10 Gbps if that distance is shortened to 165 feet.

The three various types of Cat6 cable are compatible with a bandwidth frequency from 550MHz to 750MHz. Cat6 cables include eight copper connectors and four pairs of twisted wires.

The four pairs of twisted wires can be all used to achieve top-level signal quality. These cables utilize the RJ-45 standard connector, similar to its former versions.

Next, we will cover the specifications for all three types of Cat6 cables.

The Cat6 PVC Cable

The Cat6 PVC cable is ideal for installations that require being outdoors. It features polyvinyl chloride (PVC) jacket material, and similar to the other two types of Cat6 cables, it includes eight copper connectors and four pairs of twisted wires.

It is a type of Cat6 cable that works with a bandwidth of up to 550MHz and allows data transfer at a rate of 1 Gbps traveling a length of up to 100 meters and 10 Gbps for a distance of 50 meters.

This type of cable is outstanding against near-end crosstalk, alien crosstalk, and EMI. However, you cannot use this type of cable as a substitute for plenum cable, similar to riser cables. This is because its jacket material can be easy to catch on fire.

The Cat6 Riser Cable

The Cat6 Riser Cable complies with various security guidelines as plenum cables do. It is also made with durable copper material, which makes it UL affirmed link.

The cable features high-quality CMR jacket material, but it is not as impressive as plenum cables. It has a similar UL security certification to the Cat6 plenum, which is UL1666. The Cat6 Riser Cable cannot be a substitute for plenum cables.

This cable type works with a 550MHz bandwidth and 1Gbps data transfer rates traveling up to 100 meters. It also supports 10 Gbps data transfer rates with a distance of 50 meters.

The Cat6 Plenum Cable

Finally, the Cat6 plenum cable is made to be utilized in plenum areas, which is one of the reasons why custom Cat6 Plenum cables in bulk are often requested. The plenum is the area inside structures that house air and heating systems.

These areas maintain communication cables such as the ethernet cables. The Cat6 Plenum Cable features CMP (Communication Multipurpose Cable or Plenum). Its jackets have a fire-retardant protective coating making them ideal for residential and commercial structures.

One of the great features of the Cat6 Plenum cable is its excellent standing with the UL910 security guidelines enforced by UL (Underwriter Laboratories). It is very popular as a substitute for the Cat6 riser cable type.

The cable works with a bandwidth of a maximum of 550MHz as well as 1 Gbps of data transfer rates at a length of up to 100 meters. Plus, 10 Gbps at a distance of 50 meters.

The high speed at which this type of cable connects allows it to be used for applications such as local area networks. Made with high-quality PVC jacket material to function even in extreme conditions with temperatures from -13 to 257 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is made for durability and it is UV resistant, making it a popular choice to buy bulk Cat6 Plenum cables for most applications. Users can purchase different orders including 500ft Cat6 Plenum cables in bulk or 1000ft Cat6 Plenum cables in bulk.
