HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface, there is a wide variety of common adapters

which convert or adapt, switch and split these signals to other formats. The intention of VGA to HDMI

adapters for example is to allow a non HDMI device, in this case VGA, to be connected to the device

that has the HDMI output. Many of the adapters, DVI (Digital Visual Interface) and VGA (Video Graphics

Array) have been expressly designed and manufactured for the outputs that are common on computers.

These adapters are popular as are those that allow for the connection of video games setups and DVD

players.

DVI and VGA to HDMI adapters are popular and common as they allow the simple connection of a home

computer to any HDTV which has a HDMI port. This arrangement allows content stored on the computer

to be streamed directly to the television. In cases where the computer does not have a spare VGA port,

it is still possible to connect the computer to the HDTV using a common USB to HDMI adapter.

There are HDMI adapters which overcome the problem of having too many components and not

enough available ports on the HDTV. It is not uncommon for homes to have a couple of different DVD

players and a computer gaming console, all of which have HDMI ports. In most cases, the HDTV will

have at most, two matching ports. To overcome this quandary, there are HDMI to component adapters

which work well, showing little if any loss in video quality. There are also HDMI switches which can

be multi-port and powered with low voltage DC adapters. These devices, often simply called splitters

are connected to the TV through a HDMI port and then to each accessory. The adapter allows for the

switching between the various devices that are commonly connected to the TV through the splitter.

Although there is a tendency for the electronics industry to keep moving forward and people abandon

the old technology for the newest available, there are “die hards” that keep their older equipment. This

calls for connectors which can marry non-HD devices with HDMI outputs, these adapters can be for

co-ax, RCA cables or SCART which is a common European format, not often seen in the US. With these

various adapters older models of game consoles for example can still be used on modern televisions.
