Fiber Optic Cables

For larger installations involving fiber optic cable, sometimes buying individual fiber cables simply isn't the most economical option. At Cables.com, we offer both single mode and multimode fiber optic cable in bulk so you can get the best deal no matter the size and nature of your data center.

How Does Fiber Optic Cable Work?

In short, fiber optic cables work by transmitting data through pulses of light that travel through their glass filament cores at the speed of light. These glass cores consist of a flexible, transparent fiber drawn to a diameter that's even more fine than a strand of human hair. This translates into data transfer speeds of up to 40 GB at distances of up to 150 meters in the case of our 10-gig OM3 Fiber Optic Patch Cables

Here at Cables.com, we stock both Single Mode and Multi Mode Fiber Optic Cable. As mentioned in previous posts, single mode fiber optic cables hold a significant advantage in terms of both bandwidth and reach, with better numbers on insertion loss and return loss. But those benefits come with one drawback: price. Single Mode optical fiber will be more expensive than multi mode, but that doesn't mean you have to lose out on quality. For a significantly lower cost, multi mode optical fiber cable like our OM4 40 GB fiber optic patch cable is often more than enough for most data center networks.

Fiber Optic Cable in Bulk

Buying bulk fiber optic cable involves some additional considerations from the usual decisions about single mode, multimode, etc. It’s important to consider the type of installation(s) and the environments where the fiber wire will be installed. This includes whether the cable will be exposed to any weight/tension, its location indoors or outdoors, if additional hardware such as connectors and other accessories may be needed, and the construction of the cable with respect to how easily it can be cut to the necessary lengths and terminated in the various ways required by the project.

If you've decided to go with bulk multimode fiber optic cable, you can purchase Duplex Multimode 50 micron and Duplex Multimode 62.5 Micron cable with PVC Riser-rated jackets in lengths up to 1000 feet. A Riser-rated jacket means that these fiber optic cables are safe for installation between floors in multi-story buildings, which is something you want to keep in mind with regard to fire hazards.

We also over Bulk OM3 10 Gb Duplex Multimode 50 Micron fiber optic cable, with zipcord construction for easy separation. It enables you to send and receive signal at the same time over the same fiber cable, enabling data transmission at 10Gb speeds.

Finally, if investing in singlemode fiber optic cable is an option for you, you can purchase a 1000 foot roll of bulk singlemode fiber cable from Cables.com. It's ideal for transmitting data across a long distance, and at high speeds. It's also constructed with that Riser-rated jacket, which while not as fire-resistant as plenum jackets nonetheless works toward decreasing risk toward personnel in the event of a fire.
