The Road to SVGA
We've talked a bit about VGA and SVGA cables in the past, and today we're going to revisit when and why you might want to invest in an SVGA cable. In 1987, VGA or Video Graphics Array was first created by IBM, and it quickly became the standard for A/V setups in offices, classrooms, and the home. The problem was that it only allowed for up to 256 colors at 320 by 200 resolution. In 1990, IBM went on to produce the Extended Graphics Array (XGA). This was later followed by XGA-2 which provides 16 million colors at a resolution of 800 by 600 pixels, as well as 1024 by 768 resolution in 65,536 colors.
But SVGA came on the scene in the late 1980s, when it was developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). This type of monitor was able to use 16 million colors no matter the resolution, and it would quickly outshine VGA as the favorite for A/V setups. Though there have been further developments since then, the use of SVGA is still commonplace in numerous tech environments. Even LCD screens and HDTV continue to rely on the use of SVGA ports!
